What is the closest airport to Las Terrenas?
Samaná El Catey International Airport (code AZS), also called Presidente Juan Bosch International Airport, is the closest to Las Terrenas: about 15 miles (24 km), or roughly a 30-minute drive. It sits on the Samaná Peninsula, west of the town of Sánchez, in the same province as Las Terrenas.
It is the most convenient gateway to Camp Can-Am on Avenida Emilio Prud'Homme, the starting point of all our tours. Its international service is mostly seasonal and concentrated in winter, with nonstop flights from Canada and Paris. If nothing fits your dates, the country's larger airports work well too.
Which airports can you use to reach Las Terrenas?
Four international airports are practical options. The main differences are the number of flights and the length of the drive to Las Terrenas.
| Airport | Code | Road distance | Typical drive time | Why choose it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Samaná El Catey (Presidente Juan Bosch) | AZS | about 15 mi (24 km) | about 30 min | closest; seasonal nonstops from Canada and Paris |
| Santo Domingo Las Américas | SDQ | about 98 mi (157 km) from the city | 2 to 2.5 h | many flights, including New York, Newark, Miami, Atlanta and Boston |
| Punta Cana | PUJ | about 180 mi (290 km) | 3 h 35 to 3 h 50 | widest choice of nonstops from the US, Canada and Europe |
| Puerto Plata Gregorio Luperón | POP | about 120 mi (193 km) from the city | 3 h 25 to 4 h | nonstops from Canada and the US East Coast |
Drive times are route-planner estimates without stops or traffic. Arriving via Santiago (STI), about 110 miles (176 km) and a little over 3 hours by road, can also be considered.
Are there nonstop flights from the United States to Samaná?
No. According to flight schedules checked in October 2026, there is no nonstop service between the United States and Samaná. US travelers fly into Punta Cana, Santo Domingo or Puerto Plata, which have nonstop flights from many cities.
- Punta Cana (PUJ): American, Delta, JetBlue, Southwest, United, Frontier and others, from hubs such as New York (JFK), Newark, Miami, Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth, Boston and Denver.
- Santo Domingo (SDQ): JetBlue, Delta, American, United and Arajet, from New York (JFK), Newark, Miami, Atlanta, Boston, Fort Lauderdale and Orlando.
- Puerto Plata (POP): American, Delta, JetBlue and United, from Miami, Atlanta, New York (JFK) and Newark.
From any of these airports, plan on a 2 to 4-hour drive to Las Terrenas.
Can you fly nonstop from Canada?
Yes. Samaná has nonstop flights from Montreal and Toronto, mainly in winter, on Air Transat, WestJet and Air Canada; schedules published in October 2026 also show Quebec City service from mid-December 2026. The flight from Montreal takes about 4.5 hours.
Demand is growing: Aerodom, the operator of the Dominican airports, expects roughly 39% more seats from Canada to Samaná for winter 2026-2027. Punta Cana and Puerto Plata are also served nonstop from several Canadian cities. Packages, prices in USD, best season and entry rules for Canadian travelers are covered in our guide to a side-by-side tour in the Dominican Republic from Canada.
Is there a direct flight from Europe?
Yes, seasonally, from Paris. Air Caraïbes opened a nonstop Paris-Orly to Samaná route on December 15, 2025, with up to two weekly flights in winter on an Airbus A350-900 and a return to Paris via Santo Domingo. The airline has announced the route will resume on January 4, 2027, with two weekly flights. Flight time is about 9 h 45. Check when booking whether your flight is nonstop or stops in Santo Domingo.
Are transfers to Camp Can-Am included in the tour?
Yes. Every package includes scheduled transfers between the airport or agreed meeting point and Camp Can-Am. They are arranged from the travel details you confirm with our team: airport, flight and arrival time.
- Recommended airport: Samaná El Catey (AZS), the closest to Las Terrenas.
- Other arrivals: Santo Domingo, Punta Cana, Puerto Plata or Santiago can be considered, depending on your flight and the transfer conditions agreed with the team.
- Detailed itinerary: stages, places and nights are shared with registered participants.
- Delayed or canceled flight: message the team on WhatsApp as soon as possible; we will look at adjusting your welcome and transfer to the new arrival time.
- Extra nights: you can extend your stay before or after the tour. Additional lodging and transfers are only included if they appear in your quote.
The full inclusions are listed on the Discovery Raid (7 days), Grand Raid (10 days) and Expedition Raid (13 days) pages, and on Pricing and options.
Can you drive or take a bus to Las Terrenas?
Yes, but you do not need to for the tour, since scheduled transfers are included. If you arrive early or stay longer, the main road from Santo Domingo is the Autopista del Nordeste, a toll highway, and air-conditioned buses link the capital with Samaná or Sánchez in 2 to 3 hours.
The Canadian and French governments warn that road safety is poor in the Dominican Republic: they advise avoiding night driving and considering a licensed professional driver. During the rainy season, water builds up quickly on the roads. Rules for driving with a foreign license are covered in our guide to driver's licenses and UTVs in the Dominican Republic.
What do you need to enter the Dominican Republic?
Every traveler must complete the free electronic e-Ticket form on the official Dominican government website (eticket.migracion.gob.do) before arriving. It generates a QR code that you show when entering and leaving the country.
According to the French Foreign Ministry, the paper form is no longer available at the airport, and travelers without the QR code face an 80 USD fine. Be wary of websites that charge for it. Passport and length-of-stay rules depend on your nationality, so check them with the Dominican authorities, your government's travel advice or your airline.
How do you plan your arrival with RAID CARAIBES SSV?
The simplest approach is to choose your tour and date first, then confirm your airport with the team before buying flights.
- Check the upcoming departures and the best time to go.
- Send a request with your departure city, intended arrival airport, dates and the number of drivers and companions.
- Confirm the airport and flight times with the team before booking: the scheduled transfer is arranged from that information.
- Complete your e-Ticket before you travel and bring your driver's license if you plan to drive.
